Are lip fillers a good choice? Myths debunked
Among the wide range of dermal filler treatments that we offer here at Allure Aesthetics Ltd in Abergavenny, South Wales, is lip fillers - otherwise known as lip augmentation.
Lip fillers are one of our most highly requested treatments, and we've managed to build up a solid reputation with our wonderful clients as they travel to our skin and laser clinic from all over South Wales. This is largely down to the fact that through years of experience, and countless clients with individual wants and needs, we have managed to perfect our technique. We also use only the highest grade Juvederm Vycross product, meaning results are not only fantastic, but also the longest-lasting, which helps our clients save money in the long-run as they don't need to seek a top-up as regularly as they would with other branded fillers of lesser quality.
Despite the ever-growing demand for lip fillers, there are still a lot of myths that we often have to debunk. This in fact goes for every cosmetic treatment, whether surgical or non-surgical.
We receive many different questions about the lip augmentation treatment during the consultation process, and many clients tell us they have heard different horror stories from friends, family or the media - and these are unfortunately largely related to under-qualified "practitioners" making a botched job of the lip filler procedure. For this reason, we felt it would be useful to go ahead and debunk a few of those lip filler myths! Myth: "People will be able to tell that I've had lip fillers"
A quick Google image search of "celebrity lip fillers" will bring up a host of lip filler results on the rich and famous, and all with varying degrees of success. Some look fantastic, some less so. Some are just simply over-cooked. The bad results, or over-cooked results, can often be enough to turn people away from the idea of having a lip filler treatment. The truth behind these images is that, when performed safely and correctly, the results of all dermal fillers can indeed look tremendously natural - it's just that some people prefer not to go the natural route, take on board bad advice or choose a practitioner that perhaps didn't have their clients best interests at heart.
A fully-trained medical practitioner will be able to provide you with a subtle hint of volume (0.5ml or 1ml options are available at Allure) and an aesthetically pleasing shape for your lips, which will produce the much desired outcome. It's important to have an understanding as to what you'd actually like in terms of a result - but we'd always advise that subtle, natural and gentle enhancement of your natural beauty is the way to go. Listen to the advice of your lip filler practitioner - they know best, after all!
Most importantly, work with the beautiful face that you have been given, not against it! There is no point in turning up for your consultation requesting to look like Angelina Jolie. You're you, and you're unique. You're not Angelina Jolie. Make the aim to come away looking just like yourself - but with a much sweeter pout!
Here are two examples of subtle, natural lip filler results that have been achieved here at Allure Aesthetics Ltd:
Myth: "The substance that's injected into the lips is dangerous"
This is quite simply not true, provided you're going with a reputable and highly experienced clinic. There are a wide range of brands out there that are used for lip fillers, all giving a promise of a fuller, plumper look. Look for brands that contain Hyaluronic acid, such as the Juverderm lip fillers that we use at Allure. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that is already found in our body. The lip filler injections that contain this substance simply reintroduce it into our bodies, stimulating what's already naturally there, while working hard to provide that plump pout that you're looking for. Juvederm are a leader in the dermal filler market, and these fillers contain no unnatural substances at all - just a healthy dose of what our body already contains.
Myth: "You should only get lip fillers if you have thin lips"
It's certainly true that the most common reason people have lip fillers is to plump and fill out thinner lips, and this can be especially true for our older clients as the lips do have a tendency to naturally thin as we age. With that said, fillers can do so much more than just treat those with thin lips. Lip fillers, when administered with skill and expertise, can contour your mouth and elegantly define a cupids bow. They can also hydrate dry lips and add beautiful symmetry to your face. The possibilities are quite endless when it comes to lip filler injections, so don't be fooled into thinking they are only designed to pump up your lips to make them look like big kissable smackers!
Myth: "You can be too young/old for lip fillers"
Dermal fillers are well known for their anti-ageing qualities, as the hyaluronic acid triggers collagen into the skin in order to rejuvenate the selected injection sites. On top of this, they also enhance the area and add volume. Celebrities of all ages use dermal fillers as part of their beauty regime, including Jennifer Aniston who uses fillers to prevent ageing, through to Kylie Jenner who uses fillers to help form those infamous lips.
Myth: "Lip fillers make your lips feel really weird"
This is another very popular lip filler myth that often does the rounds! Apart from some swelling and perhaps a little bruising (which generally lasts a day or two), your lips will return to feeling normal very quickly. Many of our patients claim that they forget they have had lip fillers injected until they look in the mirror - so fear not, you're not going to feel like you have two big strips of aching rubber attached to your face or anything!
Myth: "When the lip filler wears off lips end up looking even smaller"
No. Just, no. Your lips will simply return to their natural size. But this can be avoided with lip filler top-ups as and when required. You can either keep the plump sufficiently maintained by having these lip filler top-ups, or simply opt to stop receiving lip filler injections (you will experience no side effects by stopping). Your lips will definitely not be any smaller than when you first started having the treatment. The hyaluronic acid that is introduced into your lips will slowly dissolve over time, leaving you with your natural looking lips.
Myth: "Lip fillers cannot be reversed"
Provided the lip filler injections you receive contain hyaluronic acid, the effects will not be permanent. As mentioned previously, the filler is naturally broken down by the body over time, but if you find that you're not happy with your results, then there is the possibility to instantly dissolve the filler by using a substance called Hyalase. This is very rarely needed as the vast majority of clients are extremely happy with their results at Allure, but it does give many people peace of mind knowing that there is an option to reverse the treatment if that's what they decided they wanted to do.
