Blog | Bye Bye Breakouts

If you’re breaking out in acne, don’t panic, this happens to so many people! Around 33% of women in their 30's suffer with acne and around 12% of men in their 40's suffer with acne.

So what is acne? Acne is caused when our oil production in our skin becomes excessive, and it can clog pores, causing an inflamed spot or pustule. Hormones, stress, diet, skin environment and medication can all contribute towards breakouts.

But not to fear, there are some things that can help control acne and oil production and battle breakouts.

A treatment cleanser used once or twice a week, aside from your daily cleanser, which contains salicylic acid, is great for keeping oil production at bay.

Salicylic acid is very good for acne prone skin as it’s a natural anti-inflammatory and clears out oil in the pores.

Alumier clarifying cleanser is great as a once or twice a week wash, it contains 2% salicylic acid and also contains aloe to soothe and calm skin.

Another great product which can be applied directly to acne breakouts is the Acne Balancing Serum.

It is a lightweight serum that penetrates pores to reduce acne, allow skin to heal and prevent new pimples. It contains encapsulated salicylic acid which controls how it is delivered into the skin.

Acne balancing serum also contains an ingredient called Hinokitiol. It is a superpower ingredient that has soothing, anti-irritant, antioxidant and brightening properties.

Depending on the stage of your acne, we also have Obagi skin systems for more stubborn and inflamed acne. These will need to be discussed and prescribed by our lead nurse Roisin.

The best ingredients for acne prone skin are salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide and believe it or not, vitamin A (Retinol) can also help. Along with good skincare, we recommend a course of Obagi Blue Peel Radiance peels. These are salicylic acid based, and are great for oil control, spot prone skin, hyperpigmentation and they are also anti-aging! Win win.

It’s worth noting that acne is not caused by poor hygiene, or diet alone. Many people who experience acne have a great diet and hygiene routine, but still experience breakouts.

These products can all be purchased in clinic.

If you're suffering with acne, pop down to our clinic in Pontllanfraith, or book in for a consultation to discuss further and get your journey to clearer skin started!
