Laser Hair Removal – What to expect before, during, and after treatment

Considering Laser Hair Removal? Here’s everything you need to know

Laser Hair Removal is one of the most effective ways to achieve long-term hair reduction.

Whether you’re tired of shaving, waxing, or dealing with ingrown hairs, this advanced treatment offers a smoother, low-maintenance solution. But what actually happens before, during, and after your sessions?

Here’s what you need to know before booking your treatment.

Before your Laser Hair Removal treatment

Consultation & patch test

Before starting treatment, you’ll need a consultation with a Skin Expert to assess your skin and hair type. A patch test will be performed to ensure your skin responds well to the laser and to determine the most effective settings for your treatment.

Pre-treatment guidelines

To prepare for your session:

  • Avoid sun exposure – Tanned skin is more prone to sensitivity and pigmentation risks.

  • Skip waxing or plucking – The laser targets hair follicles, so the root must be intact. Shaving is fine.

  • Shave the treatment area – This ensures the laser focuses on the follicle without burning surface hairs.

  • Avoid active skincare ingredients – Stop using retinol, AHAs, or exfoliating acids a few days before treatment.

During your Laser Hair Removal session

What to expect in clinic

Your session will begin with cleansing the treatment area. A cooling gel may be applied before the laser is used to deliver controlled pulses of light to the follicles.

Does it hurt?

Most clients describe the sensation as a mild stinging or snapping feeling - similar to an elastic band. Any discomfort is minimal, and modern lasers include cooling technology to enhance comfort.

Treatment Duration

  • Small areas (e.g., upper lip, underarms): 10–15 minutes

  • Medium areas (e.g., bikini line, face, arms): 20–30 minutes

  • Larger areas (e.g., legs, back): 45 minutes+

Multiple sessions (usually 6-8) are required to achieve the best results, as laser treatment works during the active hair growth phase.

After your Laser Hair Removal treatment

Immediate aftercare

Your skin may appear slightly red or feel warm, similar to mild sunburn. This usually settles within a few hours. To soothe your skin:

  • Apply aloe vera gel or a cooling cream.

  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, and intense workouts for 24-48 hours.

  • Use SPF 50 daily, as treated skin is more sensitive to UV exposure.

Hair Shedding & Results

Over the next 1-2 weeks, treated hairs will shed naturally. This is not regrowth - it’s a sign the follicles have been effectively targeted. Each session progressively reduces hair growth, leading to smoother skin with fewer, finer hairs.

Long-Term Maintenance

Most clients see up to 90% hair reduction after their full course. Occasional maintenance sessions may be needed, depending on your hair type and hormonal factors.

Is Laser Hair Removal right for you?

Laser hair removal is suitable for most skin tones and hair types, though results are always best on darker hair. The best way to find out if it’s right for you is to book a consultation with our Skin Experts.
