Understanding the Menopause: A Personal Note from Roisin, Owner and Clinical Lead at Allure Aesthetics

I’ve worked with so many incredible women, and one thing I’ve learned is that the menopause affects each of us differently. It’s a natural part of ageing, but despite being something every woman will experience, it’s still surrounded by so many myths and misunderstandings. I believe in empowering our patients with knowledge, so I wanted to explain what the menopause really is, how it affects your body, and how you can manage these changes with confidence.

What Exactly is the Menopause?

The menopause is essentially the point in a woman’s life when her menstrual cycles come to an end. Officially, it’s diagnosed after you’ve gone 12 months without a period, which typically happens between the ages of 45 and 55. However, some women experience it earlier, which is referred to as early menopause.

The years leading up to menopause are known as perimenopause. This phase can last for several years, and it’s during this time that your body begins to produce less oestrogen, leading to the symptoms we often associate with menopause.

Common Symptoms of Menopause

Menopause symptoms can vary greatly, but here are some of the most common ones I see in clinic:

  • Hot flushes – Sudden waves of heat, usually affecting your face and neck.

  • Night sweats – Intense sweating during the night that can leave you feeling unsettled.

  • Mood changes – Things like anxiety, irritability, and mood swings can become more common.

  • Sleep disturbances – Many women struggle with insomnia or find it harder to get a good night’s sleep.

  • Weight gain – A slower metabolism can often lead to weight gain, particularly around the tummy.

  • Vaginal dryness – Reduced oestrogen levels can cause dryness and discomfort.

  • Decreased libido – Many women experience a reduced interest in sex.

Some women experience very few symptoms, while others may find it more challenging.

There's no ‘one size fits all’ experience.

How Menopause Affects Your Skin

One of the lesser known but significant impacts of menopause is how it affects your skin. As your oestrogen levels drop, you may notice:

  • Dryness and thinning – Your skin might lose some of its moisture, making it feel drier and more prone to wrinkles.

  • Loss of elasticity – With reduced collagen production, your skin can begin to sag.

  • Pigmentation changes – You might see age spots or patches of hyperpigmentation.

  • Acne – Yes, hormonal acne can make an appearance, even if you didn’t have it when you were younger.

These changes can be tough on your confidence, but thankfully, there are plenty of options to help manage both the physical and emotional symptoms of menopause.

Here’s how we can help:

  • Medical-grade skincare – We use products designed to deeply hydrate and boost collagen production, helping to improve your skin’s texture and reduce fine lines.

  • Microneedling and skin rejuvenation – Treatments like microneedling and laser therapy can work wonders for concerns like pigmentation, loss of elasticity, and wrinkles.

  • Vaginal Rejuvenation – Vjuve Skin Tightening can help with vaginal dryness, incontinence, and general discomfort, giving you back some confidence.

Menopause doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. By taking care of your overall health and skin, you can navigate this phase of your life feeling empowered and confident.
